Sewing a costume

Hello dear reader,

the first example you will see is also my first try to handcraft a costume.

It has a historical look although it is not authentic. I have developed a short jacket with mittens. The idea started by getting an old fabric of wool by my friend who had no use of it anymore. As I always wanted to realize something with wool and the starting cold season was right about to begin I loved the idea to use my creativity on this piece…

Here it is. A sleeveless cape is the basis. As I am not yet used to design I began with a basic top which I made with the help of a description. The further steps consisted of adjusting the example up to what you can see now.

While I was preparing the prototype the Material and idea got more and more shape. The wool had to be prepared. I washed it wool friendly, ironed, cut it. Collected the proper missing stuff: the lining, buttons, ribbons…

As I had a rest of fabric I had to carry out carefully to get everything I wanted to create.

The mittens were quite easily done. I used a sleeve template and altered it by choosing the length and sewed it together.

To give you an impression on how the fabric looked before the finishing.

You see the color has been changed too! I was so courageous to dye it by hand. It still has to be proved washable.

The color product I used was Simplicol expert especially for hand painting and a fixer.

Right now for Christmas Holiday, everything has been finished.

Next year I will start with the skirt and corsage. I wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new Year!

Hello on my Tailoring blog

I am a tailor for womens’ garment and I presently  work at home for learning to design. On this blog I want to share my experiences and get and let other people be inspired.

How I work:

I have spent the year 2018 almost mostly to get into the stuff of constructing properly and there is much potential for more.

A nice method of constructing that I use is to start with a 1:3 scale on paper. It is practical as you can put all your meassurement easiliy on a scatch. After that I copy it into a realisic scale.

Then the cutting pattern is ready for a first try on nettle fabric which is the cheapest version in the preparation process.

It follows a longer part of getting the fabric properly done with different technics.

When the preparations are finally done the handcrafting and creative part can finally begin!

Have a look on pinterest too.
So far, for the beginning.
Best regards T Daniels
