If you’re a fashion designer actively working in ready-to-wear, you are probably very familiar with tech packs. And if you aspire to work in fashion or start your own line, you’ll need to become familiar with them. So in today’s blog post, we’ll discuss the 5 “W’s” of tech packs: what it is, who creates […]
Costume finishing
The skirt
The skirt is a wrap around skirt of light wool. I sewed a yoke as I like to combine it with the corsett and hope it suits well. The closure is a button on each side. On one side you can see a removable bag. I have described it in one of the earlier posts.
I am not 100 per cent happy with the skirt, it needed more fabric than I was expecting

so I had to find a compromise with the garment that I wanted to handcraft. The pattern is slightly asymetric it looks better when taken on.

The corsett,

again a quite simple procedure if you have already managed to draw a basic top pattern. I merely took the lower part of the top and mirrored it downwards. The adjustments were tiny steps of changing the darts until they fitted. The eyelet for the closure were sewed by hand.
Fabric in Fashion Exhibition

Fabric In Fashion explores the role played by textiles in forming the silhouette in Western fashion over the last 250 years. The examination of textiles is often separated from that of the fashionable silhouette, yet historically, textiles were as important as the cut of clothing in keeping up with current fashion. This exhibition delves into the mechanics of textiles, looking at how fibers and weaves build the materiality of fashion. It will also explore the cultural influence of fabric. The Western world’s demand for fashionable textiles of silk, cotton, wool, and synthetics has had enormous repercussions across the globe.
Fabric In Fashion highlights both clothing and flat textiles from the museum’s permanent collection, examining how the physical properties of specific fabrics determine the way a piece of clothing interacts with the body, as well as how the design and cultural associations of textiles reveal the social motivations that drive fashion forward. The exhibition is organized by Elizabeth Way, assistant curator of costume.
Costume the next

Fresh back from the winter holiday the project continues. I have collected some new impressions regarding handcrafting and creativity and hope it will find its place here in this blog.
The skirt chosen will be a wrap around skirt with a yoke the material made of two different fabrics. Aditionally a bag will be attachable and removable just as needed. Here you can see the pattern of the skirt. I still have to make out some details before the starting.
The bag however has been realized.
It is of the same material as the jacket. The suspension is of leather material and the clousure is a pressure button.
The pattern of the bag was to easy to show thats why I do not picure it here.
Sewing a costume
Hello dear reader,
the first example you will see is also my first try to handcraft a costume.
It has a historical look although it is not authentic. I have developed a short jacket with mittens. The idea started by getting an old fabric of wool by my friend who had no use of it anymore. As I always wanted to realize something with wool and the starting cold season was right about to begin I loved the idea to use my creativity on this piece…

Here it is. A sleeveless cape is the basis. As I am not yet used to design I began with a basic top which I made with the help of a description. The further steps consisted of adjusting the example up to what you can see now.
While I was preparing the prototype the Material and idea got more and more shape. The wool had to be prepared. I washed it wool friendly, ironed, cut it. Collected the proper missing stuff: the lining, buttons, ribbons…
As I had a rest of fabric I had to carry out carefully to get everything I wanted to create.

The mittens were quite easily done. I used a sleeve template and altered it by choosing the length and sewed it together.

To give you an impression on how the fabric looked before the finishing.
You see the color has been changed too! I was so courageous to dye it by hand. It still has to be proved washable.

The color product I used was Simplicol expert especially for hand painting and a fixer.
Right now for Christmas Holiday, everything has been finished.
Next year I will start with the skirt and corsage. I wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new Year!
